About the Corset

The rise of the fashion garment peaked during the age of industrialisation and mass production of garments, which brought with it a distinct idea of status, class, and values. The corsets were a marker of refinement and femininity in the era, idealising a female body type of an hourglass figure, accentuating a small waist, wide hips, and a big bust- making it a symbol of beauty and social status.

The Dark Side

The corset, a Victorian symbol of decency and refinement, held deeper socio-economic significance as a marker of fame, wealth, and status. Yet, its pursuit of the ideal female form led to harmful effects, including skeletal deformities, spinal curvature, muscle atrophy, and internal organ damage—though conclusive research is limited. Over time, the corset also became a symbol of gender oppression, representing patriarchal control over women’s bodies, both in shape and societal behavior.
